back in our town

back in our town
you were the only one who really knew me
laughing out loud
we always knew you could see through me

everything is all right
everything is all right

under the sun whispering foolish things
you could really hear me
you were the one
the only one I would let near me

everything is all right
everything is all right
everything is all right

and here I go
nobody knows
and here I go
nobody knows

i want to free a part of you
i want to see the start of you
i want to free a part of you
i want to see the start of you

(and here i go -- nobody knows)
(and here i go -- nobody knows)

back in our town
you were the only one who really knew me

apartment life front

apartment life back

a few months ago a friend sent me an ivy track off their second record apartment life saying he thought i'd like them, i was like "ya i'll listen!" and of course forgot to.. loll
then a couple weeks later another friend hit me up asking if i'd heard of ivy before, saying that the first friend showed him them recently too and that he thought i'd really like them, once again, i forgot to listen.. loll
so thennn fast forward another couple weeks and i have a third friend hit me up saying "have u listened to this band ivy?" and said this track "decay" (lyrics) reminded her of my band. so at that point i had no choice but to listen right then and there before i forgot again loll
after listening to "decay" i took her comparison as a HUGE compliment and proceeded to finally get into ivy !!
i was listening to just their first album realistic mostly, until recently when i discovered this track "back in our town" (off apartment life) was written with the help of none other than james iha and that he even sings on the track !!!!
after listening to it, i could definitely hear the james influence and fell in love with the song <3
there's a comment on the songmeanings lyrics entry that i really like:
"'you were the only one who really knew me'
so perfect. a first love, maybe? the person that understands you when you're young and confused and haven't really been out in the world yet."

studio recording of "point of view"

raisans

the lights exploded
she stood burning in front of me
she ripped my heart out and gave it to me
my eyes wouldn't open, cemented to her face
have i begun a feeble chase?

i'll be down, i'll be around
i'll be hanging where eventually you'll have to be
i'll just stare and hope you'll care
it's only everything standing in front of me

i know what you did to me
i know what you did was wrong
you're allowed just to torture me
wait a moment until i'm gone
i know you're the ticket, you gotta be
cause i let you be alone for long
got to be so completely
got to be so i can't hang on

i'll be down, i'll be around
i'll be hanging where eventually you'll have to be
i'll just stare and hope you'll care
it's only everything standing in front of me

i'll be down, i'll be around
i'll be hanging where eventually you'll have to be
they're not there, you're standing there
now you'll have to decide the fate of my sanity

live at umass 1986

live on mtv europe 1994 ( cued at raisins )

first off let me say i am not 100% sure of the accuracy of the lyrics above.. there's a couple lines i'm unsure of, but i just went with what i saw most loll
anyway, i've been listening to this song a lot lately since i got the juliana hatfield "everybody loves me but you" 12" which includes her cover of the song recorded in may 1992.
i was also talking with my friend recently about j mascis's lyrics, i said i liked them cuz they're vague usually but still somehow relatable. i always try to do that and it's not nearly as easy as j makes it sound.
for this track in particular, i love the initial feeling of just being completely in awe of someone. just completely fixated on them at first. i hate to admit it, but i'm totally that way.. :PP like u are allowed just to torture me. and i will leave my house and go hang if i think you'll be there, but i'll just stare and hope u care.. jk jk lollll
anyway..there's this live version i like too, from their nov 1988 peel session
for some reason j sounds like a baby !!??! lmaoo cute
i also love the studio recording of this track too cuz it includes one of bassist lou barlow's tape collages. he was working at a nursing home at the time and would record the daily happenings there to use in his various collages. there was an old man there "who, when we put him into the bath, he screamed like he was dying, so I recorded that." though lou kinda feels like an ass hole for it now i for one am glad he did it, cuz i love the old man mumbling "you're killing me" in the bridge..
