your little pawn
another new discovery for me... i saw the record cover at work in the new arrivals and was like ok what is this i gotta listen and i'm so glad i did !! i really loved this album and ppl have been telling me his second album is even better ?? is that possible ?? loll i still gotta check it out but i'm very excited to. apparently originals of this record go for like $1k so i had to settle for the repress, i only wish they had kept the exact same og cover cuz it's so good with the txt too lol he seems like a pretty elusive dude or maybe just still pretty undiscovered, so sorry for lack of extra stuff lol
bobb was interviewed for an article in a psych mag in 2012 and talked about most of his songs, this is what he shared about this track:
"the funny thing about this songs besides that it’s an obsessive-compulsive infatuation song about myself and my obsessive-compulsive personality is that the lovey-dovey allusions of grandeur still shine through in a romantic way. of course, i would say that because i still would like to consider myself romantic in a sort of twisted, topsy turvy kind of way, even though this song indicates otherwise. go figure." loll love it
i've heard this name here and there but kept forgetting to look into it until i came across it again on the 1995 s/t mary lou lord ep where she covers a few songs with none another than one of my favs juliana hatfield !!! ( check out this vid of juliana in 92 and mary in 00 covering frond's "he'd be a diamond" ) then luckily not too long after that i found a copy of new river head in the new arrivals at work and was very stoked to throw it on the turntable ;) low and behold this record f#@&*n RULZ !!!! i immediately fell in love with the title track, reminded me of if j mascis did an old folk song lolll loved the solos loved the melodies, such a good track
earlier i was actually reading this interview from nov 2021 on aquarium drunkard with the frond ( i call him that now ) and the interviewer made a j comparison as well and i liked what frond ( real name nick saloman ) said in reply:
"j. and i, i know him but not that well. we’ve played together a few times and i’ve met him a few times, and he’s a nice guy. he wears his heart on his sleeve. well, he doesn’t pretend he doesn’t like other stuff, like some people do. i guess we’ve both been doing similar type of stuff on either side of the atlantic. he’s a bit more noisy and indie than i am. but you know. we’re both kind of oldish guys playing cranked up. it’s compatible really. when i hear something by j or dinosaur jr., i say, oh, i know that. i’ve done that. and i’m sure he does the same with me. i think it all sits together quite nicely."

in your head
they tell him that he should be dead
radionic thugs are getting in his head
he sorts it out by sound and vibe
knowing that it's all true and it's a lie
in your head
in your head
in your head
baby it's in your head
tries to wrap his car around a tree
but his vehicle never lets him down
his lot is hard but he don't mind
destination written clearly underline
in your head
in your head
in your head
baby it's in your head
invisibly he duels without a gun
impervious to everything but western sun
he breathes in eastern air
bullets flying past him but he don't care
after the light enters the eye
it's all the truth and it's a lie
with evil creatures lurking underground
why are luck and love among the things you've found
in your head
in your head
in your head
baby it's in your head...
i'll be your mirror
reflect what you are, in case you don't know
i'll be the wind, the rain and the sunset
the light on your door to show that you're home
when you think the night has seen your mind
that inside you're twisted and unkind
let me stand to show that you are blind
please put down your hands
cause i see you
i find it hard to believe you don't know
the beauty you are
but if you don't, let me be your eyes
a hand to your darkness, so you won't be afraid
when you think the night has seen your mind
that inside you're twisted and unkind
let me stand to show that you are blind
please put down your hands
cause i see you
i'll be your mirror
i'll be your mirror
i'll be your mirror
i'll be your mirror
i'll be your mirror
not much to say here tbh... partly tho cuz this crew is just so damn mysterious there just really isn't that much out there about em !! kendra smith and david roback started clay allison around 1982 it seems like, releasing their first tape on rough trade in 84. then around the same time they cut the rainy day record with a slew of friends ( amongst them, the lovely susanna hoffs of the bangles, singing the track featured above ) full of some really great covers. no live vids or pics from the rainy day session that i could find, so sorry for the lack of pics/vids from that era for this post :/
so then come 1987 and clay allison has changed their name to opal and released their first and only full length lp called happy nightmare baby on sst, with an early recordings comp being released only a couple years after that on rough trade in 1989, but not before kendra smith ended up leaving the band mid-tour the year prior in 1988. during that time, hope sandoval began playing with opal briefly in 88, but only for a short time before the band went on to end up forming mazzy star in 89 and continuing into the 90s. meanwhile, kendra smith ended up releasing a couple solo albums in the 90s ( one being five ways of disappearing as mentioned in the first part above ) before kinda going off the grid for pretty much the next 20-some years
with all the glory "fade into you" brought to the group ( shoutout the gilmore girls prom scene ) it's a shame these side groups/solo stuff haven't gotten more recognition cuz they ruleeee. i was very pleasantly surprised to find a copy of kendra's second album at work the other day, and not too long after that my bestie sean offered to sell me his copy of the rainy day lp, on top of getting both opal lps earlier this year !! :) ok i'm done i said too much
