at a party he was waiting
looking kind of spooky and withdrawn
like he could be underwater
the mighty mother with her hundred arms
swept all aside
i hate to walk behind other people's ambitions
i saw you waiting,
saint-like,
with your warning
leave alone
you don't belong here
he got nervous
started whistling
every thought a ricochet
did you notice?
well i wondered
what's the worst thing i could say?
and i froze up and sighed
you remind me of someone's daughter
i forgot her
i forgot her name ashamed
go home and live with your pain
leave alone
leave alone 'cos you know you don't belong
you don't belong here
and when i go
don't you follow
leave alone
leave alone 'cos you know you don't belong
you don't belong here
slip out quiet
nobody's looking
leave alone
you don't belong here
soo the other day on instagram i left a comment on a post by photographer jj gonson. i've been a fan of her work for a while now, becoming familiar with it first from the cover shots of hers for elliott smith's first couple records, roman candle and his s/t record released in 94 & 95. as i dug more and more into elliott i would see her name all the time having taken tons of photos of his beginnings as a solo artist along with his pre-solo band heatmiser, including some of my favvv pics of him. in fact as far as i know, jj is the only other person given writing credit for an elliott smith song !! she helped co-write "no name #1" ( above ) which is epic lol anyways, eventually i followed her on ig and got myself a pair of the "people floating" magnets that now reside on my fridge loll click here for jj's website/portfolio
anyways back to the present, recently i commented on one of her ig posts ( a phone pic of her camera, saying she got some film shots of built to spill playing at the paradise in boston ) mentioning that my band was going to be playing the paradise next month, how excited i was for it, and that i couldn't wait to see her pics of built to spill from there. she was sweet enough to respond and asked for the details of our show, then ended up reaching out via dms and said she asked juliana hatfield for a press pass for one of the boston shows and that she was planning to come take some pics there !!!! :00 soooo unreal to think that one of my fav music photographers is going to come to one of our shows and take pics of US !!! crazy to think that pics of my band could be in the same portfolio as old pics of elliott smith loll so fingers crossed that ends up happening !! maybe i can even get her to recreate the pic of elliott in the goodyear jacket with me in mine xP lmaoo lastly, here's a pic of evan jj took in the 80s in boston :P
"i have always known i had these intimate photos of elliott, and it never occurred to me that no one else did.
the photo of him right in front of the camera tipping his hat shows him the way i remember him. cheeky and cute.
i’m glad i have these pictures to show a different side of him than the common image you see in the media of a dark and brooding man."
if i cross your path again,
who knows where, who knows when
on some morning without number
on some highway without end
don't grasp my hand and say
"fate has brought you here today"
oh, fate is only fooling with us, friend
keep your distance
oh, keep your distance
when i feel you close to me
what can i do but fall?
keep your distance
keep your distance
ah, with us it must be all or none at all
it's a desperate game we play
throw our souls, our lives away
wounds that can't be mended
and debts that can't be paid
oh, i played and i got stung
now i'm biting back my tongue
i'm sweeping out the footprints where i strayed
keep your distance
keep your distance
when i feel you close to me
what can i do but fall?
keep your distance
oh, keep your distance
with us it must be all or none at all
keep your distance
oh, keep your distance
when i feel you close to me
what can i do but fall?
keep your distance
oh, keep your distance
with us it must be all or none at all
with us it must be all or none at all
with us it must be all or none at all
ok so less of a old psych guy but a brit boy nonetheless.. i started reading the richard thompson autobiography beeswing: losing my way and finding my voice 1967-1975 the other day ( been kinda in a reading kick lately loll trying to finish a few books by the end of the year.. add me on goodreads if u got one lol i need more friends on there ) so figured it'd be appropriate to make a post !! my coworker tom got me into fairport convention and richard & linda, but it kinda took me a min to actually get around to his solo stuff, wasn't till i saw another friend posting this record that i was like ok i gotta give this a go lol i read somewhere this was considered his "alternative" album ? maybe that's just cuz it was the 90s ? lol either way, i love it just as much as his folk stuff i'd say
